EARLY 19TH CENTURY JAVANESE PEDANG LURUS #10019

An early 19th century Javanese Pedang Lurus (straight sword)more correctly known as a "pedang suduk", laminated 45cm slightly curved blade, single edged blade with 50% of the top edged, silver quillon (slightly loose)the hilt covered in repoussé silver, contained in the original wooden sheath covered with intricate repoussé silver sheet, the rear with a belt hook, some loss. These short swords from the island of Java are generally seen as originating during the Dutch colonial period in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the overall form of the weapon being inspired by European hangers and hunting swords, while the blade and decoration reflect local designs and traditions.
